hello world & about me
Hi there!
I've been wanting to make a language blog for a while, finally decided to take the plunge. The previous posts I had written previously but not published.
My main focus currently is Norwegian, as you might infer. I also do a lot in French in my day-to-day life as I live in french speaking Switzerland. Someday I will get back to my most favorite language, indonesian <3
Q&a time!
What are my favorite languages?
- English, I guess........ hard to rank my native language
- Indonesian :D
- Norwegian
- German
- French........... love/hate relationship
How do you know this many languages?????
- I grew up speaking French (and English ofc), everything else I've learned since high school
- it is my main hobby and i have put a stupid amt of time into it
- truly a ridiculous amt of time
- since 2020 I have an avg of 1h50 of language stuff a day. every day.
How do I learn languages?
- I'm primarily self taught
- I like listening to podcasts, reading books/comics, watching shows/movies/youtube in the languages I'm learning
- I also like flashcards to brute force learn some vocab
- Clearly my speaking/writing tends to lag behind my comprehension, but eventually I do also enjoy talking to people in person or online for practice
My top language learning tips
- Find fun things to do in your target language! Whether that means shows, comics, textbooks, apps, anything goes!
- Ideally have a few things to work on at a time (so when you don't feel like reading, you can watch a show, or when you don't feel like doing anything, you can watch youtubers play among us)
- Think about the things you like to do in your native language, and find ways to do them in your TL
- There is no one "right" way to learn a language - try out lots of things and find what you enjoy most!
- The main thing is to keep moving forward. There are no shortcuts to fluency, it is just a matter of time. If you put in time, you will make progress!
- Learn to accept uncertainty: you won't understand every word and that is fine! Don't get overwhelmed by everything you don't know yet, instead focus on all the words and sentences that you do understand. Celebrate small victories.
